CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Some Wyoming Department of Corrections employees are upset about a new policy that gives bonuses to new hires instead of veteran officers.

The Wyoming Association of Corrections Employees has sent a letter to Corrections director Bob Lampert calling the move a “slap in the face” to current employees.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports (http://goo.gl/Ea7JSM ) the new policy began July 1 and gives a $5,000 bonus, which is spread over three years, to candidates who are hired and then stay on at roles at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins.

Lampert says he understands the frustrations of the current employees, but the new policy was approved to help jumpstart recruiting.

The department has struggled to attract new hires.
