MORRIS COUNTY — The closed-circuit TV link between the county jail and court houses in Morris County is now a web-based video conferencing system that will cut down on transport time and money for the jail.

NJ.com reports that two years of work will now free up sheriff’s officers from transporting inmates and free local police from taking care of prisoners when they arrive for court appearances.

Probation officers can also take information from defendants without traveling to the jail.

Defendants will still travel to the courthouse for trial and major pretrial proceedings, but the video conferencing system will be used for routine court appearances.

Future upgrades will allow attorneys to communicate with their clients via video. It’s currently only set up in four areas of the jail, but will soon be available in all housing units.
