ESTANCIA, NM — A correctional officer was killed Tuesday when a co-worker struck him and another man with his vehicle.
KOAT reports that the victim was identified as Melvin Sharpe, an officer at Torrance County Detention Center.
The two officers were running along a dirt road that leads to the jail when the third officer struck them. The officer running with Sharpe was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.
The driver was leaving after his shift at the jail around 6:30 a.m. and his name has not been released since he has not been charged.
The incident is under investigation.
The Torrance County Detention Center is privately run by Corrections Corporation of America.
