ITHACA — From finding contraband drugs to overseeing a garden for inmates, some Tompkins County corrections officers seem to do it all.
The sheriff’s office recognized the efforts of several officers in 2011 and 2012 with commendations and medals in a ceremony held last month at Kendal at Ithaca.
The awards indicate the officers excelled in situations and tasks that ranged from grave to mundane.
In May 2011, for example, Officer Matthew Haney helped prevent an inmate from committing suicide. This shows Haney is observant, has his hand on the pulse of the inmate population and is engaged with them, said Undersheriff Derek Osborne.
Later that year, Sgt. Matthew Dematteo located illegal prescription drugs that were being smuggled into the jail.
