NY union wants more resources, training for correctional officers

NEW YORK — Corrections facilities are seeking a wholesale examination of its prison system to better serve its fellow officers. The tough conditions are challenging enough for officers, but many in the union say there is a need for more resources to protect against a more dangerous prison population than ever.

One of the largest obstacles facing the department of corrections in New York State is the smaller numbers of officers entering the corrections department each year.

Paul Lashway, NYSCOPBA Central Region Vice President gave good insights to pinpoint specific areas that need improvement. “They are not keeping up with the attrition, so the more officers that leave and retire, we have to replace them. One of our thoughts was they should open up another academy.”
