TRAVERSE CITY — An off-duty corrections officer’s morning bike ride came to an abrupt end after authorities say an impaired driver struck him then drove away.
Chaise Michael Russell, 25, of Traverse City, faces criminal charges in the Saturday hit-and-run. Authorities arrested Russell not far from where a vehicle hit a man, 52, who rode his bicycle along Barney Road.
The suspect drove away but the victim managed to call in a vehicle description at 8:22 a.m. A patrolling Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputy quickly spotted a vehicle matching the description on Cedar Run Road.
“As soon as the driver of the car saw the deputy he pulled over,” said Grand Traverse County sheriff’s Lt. Chris Barsheff.
Barsheff said the driver showed signs of intoxication before the deputy took him into custody.
Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said he authorized charges against Russell of leaving the scene of an accident causing serious impairment of a body function and operating while visibly impaired. A probable cause affidavit lists Russell’s blood-alcohol content as 0.067, below the 0.08 limit for driving.
Barsheff said the victim, a corrections officer for Grand Traverse County’s jail, was treated for his injuries at Munson Medical Center and later released.
Russell posted a 10 percent $10,000 bond from jail Sunday. No hearings in 86th District Court were scheduled as of Monday afternoon.
