NEW YORK — An off-duty correctional officer came to the rescue of a homeless man being attacked by a dog.
The New York Daily News reports that the officer, whose name was not released, fired a single shot at the animal and killed it as the dog pulled on the homeless man’s arm.
A witness to the event said the officer had to shoot the dog, describing it as “going bananas.”
Uninjured, the officer said he felt bad for the animal, which was said to belong to another homeless man who had been drinking with the victim. The victim was allegedly helping his friend up when the animal attacked.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital to have his non-life threatening wounds treated.
