NEWARK, Ohio — The day after a Licking County jail inmate died after jumping over a rail to the floor below, his wife raised questions about how the situation was handled.

William Overbey, 45, of Fallsbury Township, was speaking with other inmates in the upper tier of a housing module, then stood by the rail for a short period of time and jumped at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said.

Overbey was placed on suicide watch earlier Tuesday after he appeared distraught and distressed, but he made no suicidal comments. He was checked every 10 minutes, Thorp said.

His wife, Chris Overbey, questions whether that was enough.
