COLUMBUS — From Jan. 1 to March 1, officers in the Columbus area will go without shaving to raise money and awareness to fight childhood cancer.

The fundraising event ‘Cop A Beard Against Cancer’ seeks to benefit Sammy’s Superheroes in Columbus, reports the Columbus Telegram.

Platte County Sheriff Ed Wemhoff described the fundraiser as a friendly competition between local law enforcement agencies. More than half the county’s deputies and jail officers are participating in the event.

Officers from the Columbus Police Department, Schuyler Police Department and Butler County Sheriff’s Office are also participating.

Sammy’s Superheroes is named for Sam Nahorny, a Columbus boy who continues to battle cancer. It was formed in 2012 as a way for close friends to support the Nahorny family.

The group gained nonprofit status in January 2013 and has since grown to an organization lead by a 12-person board of directors. It reaches families and supporters across the state and nation through social media campaigns, fundraising events and sales of Sammy’s Superheroes t-shirts.
