Ohio sheriff opens jail lobby to provide temporary ‘warming center’

“No one should be stranded outside or in a vehicle during these extreme low temperatures”

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio — Because of the currently frigid conditions in Butler County, Sheriff Richard K. Jones is letting anyone who needs to warm up to step into the lobby area of the county jail.

“No one should be stranded outside or in a vehicle during these extreme low temperatures,” he told WHIO. “If you need a place to go, you are welcome here in our lobby. These temperature conditions can be life-threatening and we do have restroom facilities available.”

The Sheriff hopes that by providing the temporary shelter will help assist traditional shelters that may be overcrowded or under staffed during the cold spike.

Temperatures are expected to improve toward the middle or end of the week.

The lobby will remain open when temperatures are below freezing.
