OKLAHOMA COUNTY — The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office believes it thwarted a possible escape attempt.
According to Sheriff John Whetsel, on Aug. 11 a detention officer taking a break in the employee parking lot saw a candle flickering through the glass block windows of a cell on the eighth floor of the county jail. He told staff they needed to check out the situation.
Officers searched the cell Chad Yeaman and O’Neal Cotton shared.
They found a hole to the outside was chiseled out of the wall. Officers said the inmates stashed a braided rope made out of strips of bed sheets in the wall. The rope was long enough to nearly touch the ground. The inmates also removed an emergency intercom from the cell and hid contraband behind it, Whetsel said.
