ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Part of the insurance coverage for the Florida county jail that was destroyed by a deadly explosion in April 2014 has been denied, adding another obstacle for its rebuilding.
Gulf Live reports that the insurance carrier for the Escambia County Jail will pay the claim under the $25 million floor policy it holds, but it won’t pay the claim for the $45 million all-perils policy.
County Administrator Jack Brown said that the county will fight for the claim, explaining that the carrier believes the flooding issue is not included in the ‘all perils’ definition.
Brown has spoken with FEMA regarding the funding problem, hoping to continue with the $161 million-plus project to replace the facility.
FEMA does not want to move forward until it’s clear what the county is getting from flood insurance.
