All available emergency personnel surrounded the Lenoir County courthouse at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday to respond to a fire near the jail. No serious injuries were reported and the scene was cleared shortly thereafter.
Roger Dail , director of Lenoir County Emergency Services, said a dryer in the basement near a cell block caught fire. While crews were able to keep the fire from spreading, firefighters brought in fans to push the smoke out of the building. “There were flames inside the dryer — there were clothes inside of it,” Dail said.
Maj. Ricky Pearson of the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office said the fire caused more smoke than anything, and the 20 or so prisoners in the cell block next to it were evacuated...
