DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — After a DeKalb County police detective was shot by an inmate being transported between a correctional facility and a court, policy changes for inmate transport are in store.
According to WSBTV, DeKalb County is the only core Metro Atlanta County where officers still walk prisoners out in the open to their first court appearances. All others have video conferencing.
The DeKalb County jail does have a small courtroom and video conferencing system, but it’s only available at specific times and dates based on the judges’ schedules according to the Sheriff’s Office.
DeKalb Fraternal Order of Police President Jeff Wiggs said they want to see all first appearances held inside the jail.
The change in policies is being considered.
