LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — Gas leaks at the Lorain County Jail are being credited to 40-year-old pipes on the roof of the facility.
Chronicle Online reports that the Elyria Fire Department found high levels of carbon dioxide in a boiler room at the facility.
The boiler and its main gas line were shut down, but the levels of CO2 were not deemed high enough to warrant an evacuation.
“Numerous” gas leaks were found to be coming from the pipes, which were installed when the roof was built in 1976.
The jail is in a set maintenance schedule, which prevented the pipes from being repaired earlier.
Vendors were brought in to repair both the boiler unit and the pipes in the roof.
