SC working on plan to fix issues in corrections system

Lawsuit prompted a look at the policies of how mentally ill inmates are treated

COLUMBIA, SC — The Department of Corrections in South Carolina is still working out a few kinks in its system, mainly related to the treatment of mentally ill inmates, staffing and security.

According to WBTW, a lawsuit filed back in 2005 by the Advocacy for People with Disabilities is what started the hard look at policies. Now the group and the DOC are working together.

“The plaintiffs and the DOC are working together with experts to create a comprehensive plan,” said Bryan Stirling, DOC Director.

Other problems include the physical buildings and computer systems.

“We need electronically stored medical records to better follow what medicine the inmates are taking and that’s a cost,” Stirling said. He is unsure how much money it will take to fix the problems at this time.
