PIERRE, SD — A new database from the South Dakota Department of Corrections allows the public to look up any inmate currently incarcerated.
According to KELOLAND, the database allows viewers to see how long the inmate is incarcerated for and a potential date of release.
“We think it’s going to be a valuable service to the community and especially victims,” Michael Winder with the South Dakota DOC said.
In 2012, a convicted rapist was released after completing his sentence, despite fears that he would reoffend – and he did, due to not registering as a sex offender. Though the community was alerted at the time, Winder says this is another way to share information with the public in order to keep them aware of who is living in their community.
At this time, the database does not offer photos of the offenders. The DOC says they will be releasing photos on a case by case basis.
