Sheriff: Hostage situation prepped Ohio jail for disturbance

15 inmates refused to return to their cells because they didn’t want to go to bed

WARREN, Ohio — A hostage situation at the Trumbull County Jail has staff prepared for any incident, says the sheriff, including a disturbance Tuesday night.

WFMJ reports that 15 inmates refused to return to their cells because they didn’t want to go to bed. The incident was prompted by an inmate who complained about the medication he receives at the jail.

Extra deputies were called to deal with the situation, and officers from the local police department were also contacted.

The inmates returned to their cells 18 minutes later, and nothing was damaged. The inmates never made any threats.

All inmates involved in the disturbance are being held on misdemeanor charges.

Trumbull County Sheriff Tom Altiere credits the staff’s preparedness to an event last April when a corrections officer was taken hostage by three inmates.

“When we have a pod that seems to be unruly, or they don’t want to lock down, we always call the police,” Altiere said. “Fortunately, most of the time we don’t even have to use them, but they’re there in case we do.

“In this instance, they all just went back to their cells and everything was fine.”
