LONDON — A new study in Britain says an increasing number of veterans are caught up in the criminal justice system.
The report by the probation officers union Napo says veterans make up almost 10 percent of Britain’s prison population.
The study released Friday finds that roughly 8,500 veterans are in prison, and a total of about 20,000 are either in prison, on parole or on probation.
The study indicates most of these veterans have chronic alcohol or drug-related problems and many also have post-traumatic stress disorder. Most of the veterans had served in conflict zones in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland.
