HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A Harris County inmate has been charged with attacking a corrections officer, using a sharpened hairbrush.

The Texas Chronicle reports that Weylin Alford, charged in October for having a shank in a courtroom holding cell, stabbed the unnamed officer on the day the jail was undergoing inspection by both the U.S. Department of Justice and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Alford attacked the officer during a sanitation check of his cell; he refused to allow himself to be handcuffed, and when an officer opened the door, he charged the officer with a rolled up mattress.

He then used the sharpened hairbrush to inflict lacerations to the officer’s ear, temple and scalp.

A second officer who tried to subdue Alford suffered an injured hand that may be broken.

Both officers were treated at a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Alford is charged with aggravated assault on a public servant for the incident.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards arrived for a surprise inspection on Monday that is expected to last all week, according to the Chronicle. The agency is investigating several complaints, including a revelation in September that an inmate with mental health issues lived amid insects, feces and trash in his cell last year and had the means to hang himself.
