HOUSTON — A Harris County Sheriff’s Office jail officer has died of natural causes following the altercation with an inmate.
ABC News reports that Officer Tronoski Jones died at 4 a.m. after dealing with a combative inmate at the Baker Street Jail.
The inmate allegedly became argumentative and combative while being moved from one area back to his cell.
“We have no indication of any outward injury as a result of the conflict with the inmate,” Sheriff Ron Hickman said. “Although the inmate was combative, we don’t know at any point whether that contributed to his death.”
Pepper spray used during the altercation with the inmate may have played a role in the deputy’s death.
An autopsy is underway to pinpoint the exact cause of death.
Jones had been with the department since 2011. He is survived by his wife and two children, plus his mother and other family members.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
