ABILENE, Texas — An officer at the Robertson Prison Unit was attacked last week during a water shortage.
Big Country reports that the prison had been experiencing water issues for several days, one inmate going so far as to say it was days before they received a drink of water.
“We probably got water twice, maybe three times,” Ryan Michael Stevens, an inmate at the facility, said. He was not involved in the attack. “They brought it around.”
The senior warden of the prison confirmed that the facility was having water issues, but that appropriate steps to mitigate the issue were taken. The city had notified him that their water levels were dropping for unknown reasons.
They brought in water trucks, port-a-potties, potable water and pre-prepped meals.
Some inmates still acted in frustration, banging on walls and yelling. One inmate even started a fire.
As inmates were being evacuated from the block due to smoke, an officer was attacked.
It’s still unclear what caused the water levels to drop, but the issue has since been resolved.
