Texas prison employee flown to hospital after being struck by car

BRYAN, Texas — A state prison employee was flown to a Houston hospital Tuesday after being knocked off his bike outside the Wallace Pack Unit in Grimes County.

According to a Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman, a prison employee was driving a state truck with large mirrors along F.M. 1227 when one of the mirrors struck an off-duty employee on a bike around 2:40 p.m.

The truck driver immediately stopped to help the injured bicyclist, who was taken to Memorial Hermann hospital with a possible fractured hip, Spokesman Robert Hurst said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety, Grimes County Sheriff’s Office and Office of the Inspector General are continuing to investigate the accident.
