Union accuses Fla. of cutting CO holidays

Official: “Our correctional officers should not be required to work and then have their earned time taken away from them”

TAMPA — Florida DOC officers have filed a complaint against the state, alleging that it is attempting to waive their right to paid holiday time.

According to Law360, Teamsters Local 2011 filed a complaing that claimed the state committed an unfair labor practice by insisting on waiver language and refusing to change it by the time Governor Rick Scott issued his proposed budget in January.

They also say that the state acted illegaly when Scott signed a Senate bill that requires the officers to forfeit their leave if they don’t use it within specified periods.

“We approached negotiations with a sincere resolve to addressing what we believed to be an illegal forfeiture of earned hours,” Teamsters International Vice President Ken Wood said in a statement.

“It’s unfortunate that the state’s representatives showed an unwillingness to do the right thing. Our correctional officers should not be required to work and then have their earned time taken away from them.”

Representatives for the state of Florida did not have an immediate comment on Monday.
