UPDATED: Corrections officer stabbed at Kan. prison

He reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A corrections officer has been injured in a stabbing at a Kansas prison.

At about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, an officer at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility was stabbed multiple times while working at the HCF-Central Unit. He was rushed to an area hospital, but he reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

The officer has been identified as Tim Russell, a five-year veteran.

Prison spokesman Dirk Moss says the attack happened in the cell block of the main building but he could not provide any other details.

An inmate has been placed in the Administrative Segregation Unit, and a weapon was recovered at the scene.

Jeremy Barclay with the Kansas Department of Corrections said the circumstances are under investigation. The investigation is being conducted by special agents with the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Moss says the prison was never to lockdown and it is running normally.

Critical Incident Stress Team members are on site to assist facility staff who have been affected by this incident.
