RICHMOND, Va. — Two legislators are calling for a budget increase that would increase the salaries of Virginia correctional officers.
The News Leader reports that Dels. Patrick Hope and Kaye Kory proposed an amendment that would boost officers’ pay by five percent.
Officers last received a pay increase in 2007.
“There is no reason why we have people in law enforcement that should be eligible for food stamps or other types of government programs,” Hope said.
An organizer for the Va. chapter of the National Coalition of Public Safety Officers, Don Baylor, also supports the budget amendment.
