JAMES CITY, Va. — An inmate at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail is now facing new charges for biting and choking a corrections officer.

The Virginia Gazette reports that inmate William Edward Burks Jr., awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge, had a dispute with an officer about his meal tray. The verbal argument became physical, and Burks bit the corrections officer on the right hand.

Burks then proceeded to put his arm around the officer’s neck, choking him. Other officers responded to the scene and broke up the fight.

The condition of the officer was not reported on. Burks was restrained and now faces assault and battery of a corrections officer, maiming and strangulation charges.
