Va. turns down Department of Corrections study

Study would have focused on employee health and safety concerns at the Virginia Department of Corrections

RICHMOND, Va. — The General Assembly’s Committee on Rules tabled a resolution allowing them to examine the working conditions of frontline corrections officers in statewide penitentiaries this week.

“There are 30,000 inmates in prisons that [corrections officers] protect us from each day,” said Delegate Roslyn C. Tyler, according to the Virginia Gazette. “They deserve the right to be kept safe and compensated as any other law enforcement officer.”

The study would have focused on employee health and safety concerns at the Virginia Department of Corrections. It also would have inspected adequacy of staffing levels and turnover rates at correctional facilities across the Commonwealth.

While the committee acknowledged that the study was needed, no reason for tabling it at this time was given. However, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission is already three years behind in completing other studies.
