NEW YORK — It’s getting bloodier to be a Rikers Island correction officer.

Inmate assaults on uniformed staff resulting in serious injuries have nearly doubled, from 25 to 46, over the first nine months of this fiscal year compared with the same period last year, sources told the Daily News. That includes inmate Daquan Monroe, 18, who repeatedly punched a correction officer in the face at the jail’s Robert N. Davoren Center last Oct. 13, video footage recently obtained by The News shows.

“It’s happening more frequently, and something has to be done to stop it,” said Norman Seabrook, president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association. “If something isn’t done, someone will pay the ultimate price.”
