DAYTON, Ohio — A man being booked into the Montgomery County Jail in Ohio is facing more charges after assaulting corrections officers twice in one day.
WHIO reports that Melvin Brown, 27, was originally booked into the jail on an assault charge on Aug. 15.
He was seated in the post-booking area that evening after having gotten into an altercation earlier in the day with corrections officers. He then leapt from his chair and sprinted to the booking counter, vaulted over the raised counter and repeatedly punched CO Mary Klumb in the head.
The attack appears unprovoked, as Klumb is working on a computer before she is attacked.
Five officers respond to the incident, taking Brown to the ground. TASER and pepper spray is used to subdue him, though he continues to fight officers until he is placed in a restraint chair and eventually moved to special housing.
Klumb and the other five officers were visibly injured in the initial assault. All were checked into nearby hospitals and released.
Brown’s attorney has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity to the two counts of felony assault on a corrections officer that the inmate has been charged with.
Brown has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation.
