SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — A panel of Vermont lawmakers is heading to the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield to discuss treatment of inmates who suffer from mental illness.
The Legislature’s Justice Oversight Committee will hear at Thursday’s meeting from top officials in the departments of corrections and mental health on the issues.
The meeting follows the deaths earlier this year of two inmates who had suffered from mental health problems.
Annette Douglas, who died in January, had been an inmate at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington. Patrick Fennessey committed suicide at the Springfield prison in April.
