EPHRATA, Wash. — People going to Ephrata parks could soon see inmates helping with maintenance.

The city council approved an agreement with Grant County to have inmates in the work release program help in the parks.

“With the shortfalls in revenue, specifically in the parks area, we will not have our part-time mowing this summer,” City Administrator Wes Crago said. “It will just be the two full-time workers that normally don’t do mowing.”

Crago explained one of the full-time workers will take over mowing duties while the inmates help with other maintenance duties.

“We can’t have inmates on a mower, but … cleaning and dressing up a park can be done by the inmate program, which will take up some of the slack,” he said.
