NEW YORK — A woman attacked on her way to work believes she was refused help by a detention facility until after her attack was already over.

Aurelia Rodriguez told ABC News that she waited in a pool of her own blood for a minute after her attacker walked away before she saw anyone emerge from the Edgecombe Correctional Facility.

She had specifically run into the driveway of the facility for help once the attack started.

The New York Department of Corrections responded with a written statement, saying that a corrections officer exiting the building was responsible for scaring off the perpetrator that left Rodriguez with cuts, scrapes and two black eyes.

That same officer called 911 while other staff members brought her towels and waited with her until an ambulance arrived.

The DOC did acknowledge that while there are surveillance cameras mounted outside the facility, they are not monitored 24 hours a day.

Rodriguez says her attack lasted 15 minutes, and that no one responded to help until at least a minute after it was over.

She was taken for treatment to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Her attacker is still at large.
