ST. ANN, Mo. — Authorities are seeking an inmate who was accidentally released after pretending to be another person.
KMOV reports that Jemayle Johnson, 32, was released after he was mistaken for another inmate.
A correctional officer went into Johnson’s cell and told another inmate that he was released; that inmate was sleeping, and Johnson capitalized upon the opportunity by saying he was the to-be-released inmate.
The officer didn’t check Johnson’s photo to the inmate that was supposed to be released before letting Johnson leave.
Officials said the officer failed to follow proper procedure, including comparing booking photos and physical descriptions before releasing an inmate. The officer was said to have made a “human error” and a “mistake” by releasing Johnson. It’s unclear if the officer was disciplined.
Johnson was arrested for drug charges. He has no violence in his background, according to police.
