OTTAWA, Ont. — Recreational marijuana becomes legal in Canada starting Oct. 17, but correctional officers will be required to abstain for 24 hours before working, according to a policy implemented by the Correctional Service of Canada.
CTV News reported that officers must be fit for duty and must not be intoxicated before arriving to work. Managers must be able to recognize when a person is impaired or high.
According to the policy, “substance use can adversely affect job performance, conduct, the work environment, and the well-being of individuals, and can compromise the safety and security of operations, institutions, offenders, employees and the public.”
Officers who arrive to work impaired could face repercussions up to and including firing, according to the report.
