5 inmates overdose at NJ county jail

Officials believe the drug may have been synthetic marijuana and are investigating how it got into the facility

SOMERVILLE – Somerset County Jail inmates overdosed last Wednesday evening on what officials believe was synthetic marijuana.

NJ.com reports that the inmates were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Four have returned to the jail, but the fifth remains hospitalized. His condition is reported as non-life threatening.

Officials are investigating how the drugs got into the jail now that the inmates are stabilized.

Both the sheriff’s office and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the incident.
