VALHALLA – Six inmates will be charged in a drug smuggling scheme that resulted in the overdoses of 13 inmates over the course of eight days.
LoHud reports that six inmates were treated on Sunday for drug overdoses, with one going into cardiac arrest. Another four were treated on Monday. Three others took ill a week earlier, officials disclosed for the first time Tuesday.
Officials believe the drug involved was K2, or synthetic marijuana.
Those who use it suffer from stomach cramps, start hallucinating or become catatonic, and start vomiting.
All inmates treated for the overdoses have since returned to the jail.
It’s still unclear how the drugs got into the facility, but new procedures are being put in place to prevent this sort of incident from happening in the future.
On Monday, inmates Deron Strange and James Graziano were charged with promoting prison contraband after drugs and drug paraphernalia were discovered in their possession.
