Failed drug tests up 41 percent among Ohio prison inmates

Marijuana and Suboxone make up the two leading drugs that inmates are abusing

COLUMBUS – A new report states that the percentage of inmates found positive for drug abuse while serving time has spiked over the last two years.

The Correctional Institution Inspection Committee recently released the new report, stating that 41 percent of inmates in the Ohio prison system tested positive for drug use since 2012, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The most commonly abused drug was marijuana, followed closely by Suboxone, a drug intended to help opiate addicts.

The report comes just a day after prison officials revealed a drone had dropped contraband into the rec yard at the Mansfield Correctional Institution last week, inciting a fight among inmates for control of the drug package. Staff intercepted the package before inmates could get a hold of it.

The Mansfield prison has the second-highest percentage of inmates failing drug tests at roughly 8 percent. The highest is the Noble Correctional Institution in southeast Ohio, with a 9 percent failure rate.
