HOUSTON — Investigators are trying to determine how four Harris County jail inmates reached a 7th floor restricted area before their escape attempt failed.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday said the four male prisoners never had access to the general public. All were safely captured Wednesday night.

A statement from the sheriff’s office says a staffer noticed the inmates in the restricted area and the jail was locked down. Officers secured the perimeter of the building while guards searched the interior of the jail in downtown Houston.

All inmates were accounted for. Investigators had no immediate information on possible charges against the four men.

Their names and further details on their incarceration weren’t immediately released.
