85 inmates escape Mexican prison near Texas

Possibly the largest escape in Mexico’s history

CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico — A prison in a border state that already had a history of escapes suffered still another — perhaps the largest ever in Mexico — on Friday when 85 inmates used ladders to scale the 20-foot-tall walls and then disappeared.

The Tamaulipas State public safety secretary, José Garza García, said 66 of the inmates had been convicted of, or were on trial for, federal charges, like weapons possession or drugs. The others were convicted or accused of lesser offenses.

Mr. Garza García said 44 guards and employees of the prison, in the city of Reynosa, next to McAllen, Tex., were under investigation.
