WEST WARWICK, R.I. -- Rhode Island state police say they’re searching for a prison inmate who escaped from an unsupervised work-release assignment in West Warwick.

Authorities announced Wednesday that 39-year-old Jonathan Michaels of Charlton, Mass., was being sought in Rhode Island and Massachusetts after failing to return to the Adult Correctional Institutions. Police say the convicted car thief got into a pickup truck at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday after leaving his job at the West Warwick Senior Center and hasn’t been seen since.

Police say a man and woman were in the truck, which had Massachusetts plates.

Michaels was serving a two-year sentence for possessing a stolen motor vehicle and had been scheduled to be released in September 2013.

Anyone with information about Michaels is asked to call state police.
