DENVER, Colo. — A Denver Sheriff’s deputy charged with helping a dangerous felon escape the Downtown Denver Detention Center last month has resigned, officials confirmed Wednesday.

The resignation, effective May 23, means Matthew Andrews, 36, skirts any discipline that would have likely resulted from the April 7 escape, for which he faces felony charges. Attorney Reid Elkus submitted a short resignation letter on Andrews’ behalf that said only that he was leaving the department immediately. Andrews had worked there for two years in general security duties.

Denver police said Andrews told coworkers he helped Felix Trujillo, 24, walk out of the jail because he had been threatened and told there was a contract out on him and his family.
