UNION COUNTY, S.C. — Police in Union County have captured an escaped fugitive inmate who eluded authorities for two days during a South Carolina manhunt after he jumped from a courthouse window.
Brent Tyson Austin, 41, was caught around 11 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff David Taylor said Monday. Agents with the State Law Enforcement Division, S.C. Department of Corrections and Union County deputies took Austin into custody.
After Austin escaped, police agencies throughout South Carolina were notified to be looking for him, and highway signs including those along Interstate 77 in York County advised the public to be on the lookout for him.
Union County borders York County and Chester County to the west.
Austin escaped around noon Friday before a scheduled court hearing after jumping through a second floor bathroom window, authorities said. Austin then allegedly stole a pickup truck from an apartment complex near the courthouse.
Austin faces charges of larceny and possession of contraband by a prisoner, Union County jail records show. Austin started a 14-month sentence for felony drug possession in July, according to the S.C. Department of Corrections.
It remains unclear what additional charges Austin will face after his escape.
