OTTAWA, Ind. — The inmate who escaped custody of the Putnam County Adult Detention Facility Wednesday while on medical furlough has been caught.
Donald Schulte, 24, of Continental, was released from the jail at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday into the custody of a parent. He was being held for theft charges, and he was wearing an electronic GPS monitoring system when he was allowed to visit a doctor at the Defiance Clinic.
He was scheduled to return at 12:30 p.m., but he did not. The monitor signaled a warning it was possibly being tampered with. It was removed in Paulding County at the intersection of U.S. Route 127 and state Route 24.
A warrant was issued for Schulte’s arrest, and officers began looking for him.
According to a press release issued by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Friday, Schulte was caught near Oakwood in Paulding County Thursday by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Calls to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office for details were referred to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who in turn referred calls to the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.
Multiple voicemail messages left with Paulding County Sheriff Jason Landers requesting more information were not returned Friday.
The incident is being investigated by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
