ATHENS, Tenn. — A Monroe County Jail inmate has been recaptured after climbing a razor wire fence in a short-lived escape Sunday night, authorities said.
Ricky Dale Dotson II was taken into custody at 8:50 p.m. Monday at a Super 8 Motel in Athens, Tenn., according to a news release from Monroe County Sheriff Tommy J. Jones II.
Dotson climbed a fence surrounding the jail’s recreation yard and ran away shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday. A jailer attempted to grab for the inmate’s feet as he climbed, then immediately called for backup as several corrections officers gave chase.
The inmate, who initially was arrested Jan. 20 on a charge of aggravated burglary, now is charged with escape as well.
Jones thanked the members of the U.S. Marshal Service’s Smoky Mountains Fugitive Task Force for their assistance in locating the escapee.
