BINGHAM COUNTY, Idaho — A female juvenile inmate jumped out the back window of a patrol car Thursday and onto the pavement of Interstate 15.
The incident happened at about 11 a.m. when a Bingham County sheriff’s deputy was transporting the 17-year-old girl from the Bingham County Jail to the 3-B Juvenile Detention Center, according to an Idaho State Police news release.
The girl was restrained by both a belly chain with handcuffs and hobbles on her feet. She also was wearing a seat belt as she rode in the back seat of the transport car, the news release said.
About 6 miles north of Blackfoot, she reportedly removed her seat belt and opened the car’s rear passenger-side window.
The deputy saw her trying to escape and ""significantly"" reduced his speed before she maneuvered herself out of the open window, the release said.
The deputy stopped, assisted the girl and requested medical assistance. The girl’s name was not released because she is a juvenile.
The girl was transported to Bingham Memorial Hospital by ground ambulance. Her medical condition was not available Thursday night.
The investigation is ongoing.
