BAY CITY, Mich. — A woman originally held at the Bay County Jail due to unpaid fines now faces a felony charge for trying to escape from authorities.

MLive reports that Shana M. Burch was transported to McLaren Bay Regional hospital after suffering a potential seizure.

The corrections officer at the facility were told Burch’s tests came back negative and that she could be returned to the hospital, but when the officer went to get shackles from her car, Burch made her escape attempt.

An interview with Burch has the inmate alleging that when she woke up in the hospital, she was not thinking clearly and was scared of going back to jail. During her incarceration, she had become overly distraught and suffered from blackouts.

So she left. She added that once she was outside, she knew it was a bad idea, but she apparently continued as hospital security tackled her a short while later as she fled north on Trumbull.

Burch is now facing one count of escaping from jail. The charge carries a possible sentence of two years and a $1,000 fine.

She was discharged from probation on April 3, after serving two years on a conviction of maintaining a drug house.
