IONIA COUNTY, Mich — Corrections officers are holding an informational picket Friday in response to a report on the Feb. 2 escape of a murderer from the Ionia Correctional Facility.
According to MLive, the officers want local residents to contact the state Department of Corrections about what they call dangerous cuts at prisons, which threaten security.
The picket was inspired by state Attorney General Bill Schuette’s report on the escape of inmate Michael Elliott, who was convicted of four killings and sentenced to life in a 1993 home invasion incident.
The Ionia Sentinel-Standard reports major security issues – including unstaffed gun towers and the absence of a full-time perimeter security officer – have yet to be corrected.
