COLUMBIA, S.C. — The U.S. Attorney in Columbia says John David Hayes from Inman, will get 30 months tacked onto his prison sentence. That’s after he says Hayes tried to escape from the Greenville County Detention Center.
In August 2010, Hayes was being held at the detention center, awaiting transport to a federal prison. While he was waiting, attorneys say he had a female accomplice call the jail, pretend to be a U.S. Marshall, and tell the detention center that Hayes served his time, and was to be released.
The person taking the call advised the caller that a particular form must be received from the Marshal’s Office before an inmate could be released. The woman then called the local Marshal’s Office, pretended to be an official with the Marshals’ headquarters in Washington, D.C., and tried to get the release form issued.
