GIRARD, Kan. — A second inmate who escaped from the Crawford County jail on April 23 is back in custody, according to a statement from Crawford County Sheriff Dan Peak.

Olathe Police indicated that one of their officers made contact with Shaun Steven Simpson early Monday in Olathe. Simpson was on foot in an Olathe neighborhood and was taken into custody once he was identified.

The vehicle in which Simpson and Steven Ray Barnes allegedly fled the jail — a red 1999 Chevy Trailblazer — also was located at an apartment complex in Olathe, according to the statement, and has been impounded.

Barnes was captured Saturday at a Pittsburg motel; officers responded to the hotel after receiving a tip.

Simpson’s mother, Marlene Louise McAfee, 57, of Arma, also was recently arrested on the charge of aiding in the escape last month.

Investigators allege that McAfee drove her red 1999 Chevrolet Trailblazer to work Friday at the Girard Medical Center clinic, which is a quarter-mile from the jail, and then after work received a ride home and left the Trailblazer parked at the clinic. According to the statement, she allegedly left the vehicle unlocked with the keys inside.

The statement said that cameras at the Girard Medical Center captured Simpson and Barnes running around the clinic to where the Trailblazer was parked and showed the two men leaving the scene in the vehicle.

Barnes was being held on a parole violation on a theft conviction, while Simpson was being held on a charge of kidnapping and driving while suspended, according to Peak.

According to the sheriff, the two men were able to break a clamp on the outdoor recreation fence. Once they were inside the inner perimeter, they climbed up the outer perimeter fence, covering the wire with a sweatshirt.
